In 2024, the US large capitalization growth stocks were notable outperformers.
Will there be a change of theme in 2025?
Today, we will start to look at this issue.
US Large Cap Growth Stocks Powered the Market
The title succinctly summarizes the figure below.
Large beat small, growth beat value and US beat global ex-US.
It was the narrowest market in nearly 40 years, maybe longer.
Only about 15% of stocks, Magnificent 7 and alike, outperformed the S&P 500.
But this is not necessarily irrational. These stocks were much more profitable than the rest of the stocks in the S&P 500 and international markets.
The chart below shows that future earnings expectations across the four considered segments are much more balanced than trailing earnings growth. If these expectations prove true, investors will likely start repricing relative valuations of different stock classes.
However, valuations have not caught up with revisions yet. Eventually, they should.
In the next couple of months, we will try to identify a few areas where there might be a potential for outperformance.
