What is Bitcoin Halving?

Bitcoin halving occurs approximately every 4 years. The next one is around 20 April 2024.

Long story short, during a halving, the reward for mining a new block of bitcoins is cut in half.

That reduces Bitcoin's growth. If the demand for Bitcoin is constant or growing, the reduced growth of Bitcoin causes it to become scarce, and the price may go up.

The chart below shows how Bitcoin halving affected the price in the previous three halving instances in 2012, 2016 and 2020. The impact on the price was positive. Will the past repeat?

A contrarian might be skeptical. There was so much excitement about Bitcoin ETFs and halving that some argue it is priced in. You know, buy the rumor sell the news. But there is no denying that halving might have a positive price impact if the demand continues to be strong. But what if financial markets switch to a risk off mode?
